Dear FaceBook: Like, Get Real!

…Monday

“Doranna LIKES Julie Czerneda!

“Doranna LIKES Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America!”

And, on a particular day, “Doranna LIKES Doranna Durgin!”

FaceBook Fan Page

Yes, it’s the wonderful world of FaceBook.

Actually, I enjoy FaceBook. I’ve met people there and reconnected with people there, and of course I have the Fan Page there (thus the oddball third example, and YES, I would love to see you there!). And there are still FaceBook functions that mystify and defy me, but…well, that happens. Heh.

But I really, really don’t LIKE being forced into the role of a giggling fourth grader, passing virtual notes across the aisles.

“Doranna subscribes to Doranna Durgin.”

Okay, it’s  a little multiple personality-ish. Hmm.  Yes.

But the meaning is obvious. And not one that people will feel compelled to razz me about, because yes! Hello! I want to be able to see my Fan Page posts on my regular FB page!

“Doranna SUBSCRIBES TO Julie Czerneda!

Okay. Maybe it still needs some work. But I’ll take it!

FaceBook, are you listening? Dignity, please?

dignity on Facebook, surely you jest

  2. aNNE Says:

I, personally, don’t get Facebook. Maybe it’s because I’m a 47 year old old fart, but I don’t see the point. I e-mail friends. I only have a facebook account because if I friend or fan or like manufacturer/restaurant sites I can get coupons.

The one benefit I see, but one I’m not interested in, is searching for old friends I don’t have contact info. for. My dad has done that and unfortunately found most of them had died.

    SI!

  3. Doranna Says:

    Robert–well, we can TRY. ;>

Anne–hey there! I have to admit I’ve connected with a few old friends via FB, which has been a boon. But otherwise I think it’s about the networking–that is, if I want to keep track of other authors, it’s a way to do it. And it’s a way for me to make my own work more accessible. So I would guess that my needs for it are completely different from yours. 8) SI!

  4. sue brandes Says:

I have facebook so I can hear about what books or anything else some the authors I follow want to share. I do go on there more than I thought I would. “SI”

  5. Doranna Says:

Sue, I think that’s the strength of FaceBook–the ability to make “macro” connections and form community. It’s just one of those “your mileage may vary” situations! (SI!)

  6. Stephanie Says:

Facebook is so awesome yet so frustrating in that sort of way. I am fascinated by how many connections and networks there are, but at the same time, it is all very overwhelming! And it gets to a point where the sentences don’t even make sense: Joe likes TOY STORY 3 IS FOR BIG KIDS :) . Yeah, I believe there actually is a page for that. Seriously?

    SI!

  7. Crysta Says:

I miss when it was “become a fan” and it didn’t tell all your friends that you’d clicked the silly button. And now we can like comments…what’s next? Liking likes? Oh wait…you can do that now too…

  8. Doranna Says:

Crysta–wait, what? You can do what? *head spins*

  9. Crysta Says:

If you “like” something on a page that links to Facebook but isn’t on Facebook, your friends can like your like. :s

Not that it makes sense. lol

  10. Doranna Says:

Stephanie, I feel the same–the fascination, but yes…overwhelming, too.

I believe there is a page for EVERYTHING. Except Writer Owl Goingback. Toy Story can get a page, but have a Native American birthname? Outta luck! http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=108094592572771

(Although ironically it’s okay for FB to create their own community page ABOUT Owl… http://www.facebook.com/pages/Owl-Goingback/112626138753044 )
