The Geek Glasses
Seeing clearly: one of life’s little luxuries.
It’s been several years and more since I had that luxury, mainly because my eyes are in those years where suddenly everything changes, and when you’re as nearsighted as I am, it’s more effective to just take the darned glasses off than it is to play with bifocals. (I do have computer glasses.)
But the other reason is that I needed a new prescription for a while before I went the last time…and when I got it, the chain store involved managed to flip my astigmatism axis on end. I was disappointed–I thought for sure I would see better with new glasses–but y’know, it was subtle (I only found out with this most recent exam).
In the years since, those mis-ground lenses have also managed to “craze;” the anti-glare was a badly applied coating that in recent days has created glare, haze, and pitting.
So this time, I went to an ophthalmologist, who concurred–I am not a bifocals kind of gal, but there’s no doubt I need the computer glasses. I grabbed a pair of wire rims for activity and then when it came to the office pair, I went straight for the geek glasses.
I love my geek glasses. They feel…appropriate.
Also, unlike my previous arrangement of two wire-rim pairs, I can instantly tell which pair I have on my face and which pair I’m about to pick up if I don’t happen to be wearing either.
The other thing I love is seeing clearly, for the first time in way too many years. Oh my gosh! There are leaves on those trees!

Mmmm, not only couldn’t you see the forest for the trees, you couldn’t see the trees.
Glad you got that taken care of.

How I understand your plight. I not only am very near sighted, but I’ve lost the sight in my right eye almost completely–can only see a little movement. With only one eye you lose your depth perception which makes you do all sorts of crazy things, like reach for things and be a half inch off all the time and end up just knocking them over instead. Also with no sight on my right side, I’ve been known to walk right into tree branches if I’m not paying close attention. Talk about not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time—I’m the perfect example. People just laugh at me when I say I got this or that scratch by walking into a tree.

Gosh, I walk into trees even without depth perception issues… (Actually, it’s usually because I’m wearing a ball cap and the branch is just above what I can see over the brim).
I’ve discovered that I stopped making the effort to focus at all, and anytime I’m doing a corner or doorway, I do a touch-check to confirm my positioning. I expect this to continue somewhat, as a consequence of wearing my office glasses around the house…

Oh glasses are fun, I have progressive’s to see with, readers to read with and distance ( sun glasses ) to drive. I need another hand for my glasses. Oh I don’t use glasses for the computer

I do need sunglasses, but I guess those will wait! I’m looking for some clip-ons that work.
